Bob and i started getting live Christmas trees when we moved back to MN in 2004. The first tree was a tropical fern of some sort, he was big and gangly and we named him Ernie (after ernest hemmingway) Well, sadly he didn't take to solidly to the cold of MN and died shortly after the holidays. We learned from that experience that we loved having a living tree, but needed something hardier.
When we moved back to WA, we bought our second tree, Yoshino. He was/is a japanese cedar and we celebrated 3 wonderful christmases with Yoshino before we planted him in the earth. What i am getting at is that now we have moved, again and are finally in a permanent place on our own land. Something we have always adored are the interestingly twisty and pokey Monkey Puzzle Tree that grow to be a giant 100' big and just ooze personality. Bob's gramma gifted us some monies this year and we couldn't think of a better way to use it than to buy our very first tree for our land. We look forward to celebrating many holidays with this spiky fellow and dream of all the joy it will bring as it grows. Thanks Gramma!!!

It was a drippy, dank day in Brinnon where we drove to get our lil' monkey.
Whitney Gardens is an amazing Nursery about 45 miles from us. We walked through just some of the many areas with a giant umbrella and quickly sought out lots of Japanese trees we'd like to plant someday along side our Alder, Cedars and Hemlocks.

very sharp! very pokey! it was said that when this tree was first discovered that a certain man looked at it and said "it would puzzle a monkey to climb that!" and the name just stuck.

Bob proudly holds our new family member....name to be determined...
