bob and i embarked on a road trip to Ohio a few weeks ago. unfortunately this wasn't one of our epic elongated trips with fun along the way. just a straight shoot of four 12 hour days in the car. here sleeps the BEST road dog ever, Daphne...cuddled up in her nest behind the drivers seat

the funny thing about having shitty eye sight is that when you do choose to wear your glasses while driving in the sun, sunglasses are a bit of a problem. My solution is to take Bob's Bobby Martinez and shove them over my specs. works for me!

this shot is for all you folks who think we have a drinking problem, but when in Rome...ah, montanna.

a rest stop breakfast that trumps all. bob and i enjoyed stopping at rest stops and fixing up some grub. usually a "bob's" bagel which was fried in Kerry Gold butter, then smeared with local Mystery Bay Chive Chevre.

a special stop in Galchut, North Dakota to see how the farmhouse is doing.
as you can see from the photos it's taken quiet a beating since the last time we visited it 4 years ago.

here is the "science"

clearly you would choose "taco in a bag". this special ditty was found on a Latte Hut menu board in Montevideo, MN. genius, absolutely genius.

oops, caught me. this is in Hudson, MN.

more "science"

Bob's little sister Julia graduated from College during our visit. this was a splendid event that brought even more of the family together. we had a tasty meal at Marcella's in the Short North where she lives and works.

random shot of Gramma Kelly's peas and carrots. who doesn't love a vegetable dish that is 90% dairy and velveeta?

but a few shots of a local underground un-named artist in Columbus who taints the town with all sorts of strange and interesting art.

bob's gramma spent a day teaching us her well oiled methods of making Bourbon Balls and Krumkake.

love this shot. 3 generations coming together over bourbon soaked nuts. Namps would be elated!

Marilyn gives them the final dusting of powdered sugar before they are frozen and allowed to age. we still have bourbon balls that date back 7 years in our freezer. hand rolled by Namps. and another batch that includes pecans that my grandpa Ricky shelled. special stuff.

here lies the famous Johnson Family Krumkake iron that Bob's great-grandmother used. Gramma Kelly then used it and recently passed it on to Marilyn, Bob's mother. Making Krumkake is a terrific tradition and here Gramma shows us all the tricks to ensure a perfect batch. Last year i was able to track down the exact same model as this vintage beauty and gifted it to Bob...now a budding tradition in our family too.

greasing up the hot iron with a butter wrapper

in goes the batter

these norwegian cookies are paper thin. here is what happens when fat german hands such as mine manhandle the krumkake.

rolling the hot "cake" off the iron onto the dowel, then seam side down to harden

years of practice

bob takes a turn with an ever watchful eye

random shot of my ferry ride home. beer and legwarmers.
